Start with crawlability, not keywords
Before rewriting titles or adding new pages, confirm that search crawlers can reach the pages you care about. Important pages should return a normal success response, appear in your internal navigation or contextual links, and avoid accidental authentication or firewall blocks.
Check robots.txt for broad Disallow rules. Then check each priority page for a robots meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header that contains noindex. A sitemap can help discovery, but it does not override a noindex directive or make an inaccessible URL indexable.
- Open robots.txt and identify rules that affect important sections.
- Inspect a representative page source for meta robots directives.
- Confirm priority pages return 200-level responses rather than redirects or errors.
Make canonical URLs consistent
Duplicate technical URLs are common: HTTP and HTTPS, www and non-www, trailing slash variants, tracking parameters, print views and filter URLs can all represent the same core content. Canonical tags help express the preferred version, but your internal links, redirects and sitemap should reinforce the same preference.
Do not use a canonical as a substitute for a redirect when an old URL should actually disappear. Keep sitemap entries canonical, link internally to canonical URLs and use one-hop redirects for retired addresses.
- Choose the preferred host and protocol.
- Check canonical tags on templates and priority pages.
- Remove redirected, duplicate and non-canonical URLs from the sitemap.
Keep redirects simple
Long redirect chains slow navigation, complicate migrations and waste crawl effort. A redirect map should point every retired URL directly to the final relevant destination. Avoid routing old URL A to B and then B to C when A can go directly to C.
A redirect should preserve user intent. Redirecting every deleted page to the homepage is usually less useful than mapping it to the closest replacement or returning an honest 404/410 when no replacement exists.
- Find multi-hop chains.
- Look for redirect loops.
- Update internal links so users do not hit redirects during normal navigation.
Use internal links to expose important pages
Search engines discover pages through links, and people use the same links to understand your site. Important service pages should not depend on a sitemap alone. Link them from a sensible service directory, relevant guides and navigation where appropriate.
Anchor text should describe the destination. Avoid replacing every link with an exact-match keyword phrase; clear natural wording is enough.
- Identify pages with no meaningful internal links.
- Use descriptive anchor text.
- Connect related guides, tools and services where the relationship is real.
Treat performance as user experience
Core Web Vitals focus on loading, responsiveness and visual stability. For current thresholds, a good target is LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds and CLS at or below 0.1 at the 75th percentile of page loads.
Use field data in Search Console or PageSpeed Insights when available. Lighthouse is useful for diagnosis, but INP depends on real interactions and cannot be fully measured by a single lab load.
- Measure mobile and desktop separately.
- Optimize the largest above-the-fold assets first.
- Reserve image dimensions to reduce layout shifts.
- Reduce long main-thread tasks and unnecessary JavaScript.
Finish with Search Console
After technical cleanup, submit a clean sitemap and inspect representative URLs in Search Console. Use the Indexing and Core Web Vitals reports to monitor whether problems persist after Google recrawls the site.
Do not treat a green checklist as a ranking guarantee. Relevance, useful content, reputation and competition still matter. Technical SEO removes friction; it does not create demand by itself.
- Submit the canonical sitemap.
- Inspect the homepage and key service pages.
- Monitor indexing changes after deployment rather than repeatedly resubmitting the same URL.
