Word to PDF – Free Conversion Guide

Every major office app exports Word to PDF for free — you almost never need an online converter. Here are the built-in methods ranked, with notes on keeping formatting intact.

  • Free guide
  • No sign-up
  • Methods ranked

Methods at a glance

  1. Microsoft Word → Export. File → Export → Create PDF. Free in desktop Word and the web version; keeps formatting best.
  2. Google Docs → Download as PDF. Upload the .docx to Drive, open in Docs, File → Download → PDF. Free with any Google account.
  3. Built-in print to PDF. Windows: “Microsoft Print to PDF”. Mac: “Save as PDF”. Works from any app, no installs.
  4. Our Text to PDF tool. For plain .txt files only — instant, private, right here on sharjeeltahir.com.

For .docx files use the methods above. Uploading Word documents to random converter sites is unnecessary — and less private.

This is a complete guide: converting Word to PDF needs a layout engine, so here are the genuinely free methods ranked. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and your operating system’s built-in print-to-PDF all do it free in seconds. For plain .txt files (not .docx), our free Text to PDF tool on this site handles it instantly in your browser.

Why is this a guide instead of a tool?

Word-to-PDF is a solved problem: every office suite ships a one-click PDF exporter. Any website offering an “online Word to PDF converter” is simply asking you to upload a file it converts with the same engines, while showing you ads. The honest answer is to use the exporter you already have — it’s faster, free and more private.

If all you have is a plain .txt file rather than a .docx, skip everything below and use our Text to PDF Converter — it runs entirely in your browser, with font and page-size options, and nothing is uploaded.

How can I convert Word to PDF for free?

Microsoft Word (desktop or free web version)

The most faithful conversion, because Word understands its own format best.

  1. Open the .docx in Word on your desktop, or visit office.com and open Word for the web (free with a Microsoft account).
  2. Desktop: File → Export → Create PDF/XPS. Web: File → Save As → Download as PDF.
  3. Click Options to include or exclude comments and markup, or to export a page range.
  4. Save the PDF. Hyperlinks stay clickable when you use Export.

Note: Best formatting fidelity — Word wrote the format.

Google Docs

Free with any Google account; handy when you don’t have Word installed.

  1. Upload the .docx to drive.google.com via New → File upload.
  2. Double-click the file, then choose Open with → Google Docs.
  3. Go to File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf).

Note: Minor font or layout shifts are possible if the document used unusual Word fonts.

LibreOffice Writer

Free, open-source and fully offline — nothing leaves your computer.

  1. Install LibreOffice from libreoffice.org (free for Windows, Mac, Linux).
  2. Open the .docx in Writer.
  3. Go to File → Export As → Export as PDF.
  4. Adjust quality or compression in the dialog if needed, then Export.

Note: Fully offline and private — ideal for sensitive documents.

Built-in OS print-to-PDF

Every modern operating system can “print” any document to a PDF file — no installs at all.

  1. Open the document in Word or any app that can display it.
  2. Press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac) to open the print dialog.
  3. Windows: choose the “Microsoft Print to PDF” printer. Mac: click the PDF button at the bottom-left and choose “Save as PDF”.
  4. Print/Save and choose a filename.

Note: Quick, but hyperlinks may not stay clickable — use real Export when links matter.

Which method should I choose?

MethodBest forCostKeeps links & fonts
Microsoft WordEveryday .docx filesFree (web version included)Yes — best fidelity
Google DocsNo Word installedFree with accountMostly; exotic fonts may shift
LibreOfficeSensitive documentsFree, unlimitedYes
Print to PDFAny app, in a hurryBuilt in, freeFonts yes; links often flattened

What are the limitations and privacy risks?

Fonts travel with the file — or they don’t. If you used an unusual font, embed it (Word: File → Options → Save → Embed fonts) or the PDF may look different on other computers.

Accept tracked changes first. Exporting with markup still visible bakes the revision marks into the PDF. Review → Accept all changes before exporting a final copy.

Print-to-PDF flattens links. Hyperlinks, email addresses and table-of-contents links stay clickable with File → Export, but often die when you “print” to PDF.

Watch the file size. Full-page images bloat PDFs. In Word, use Picture Format → Compress Pictures before exporting anything you’ll email.

When would I need this?

  • Sending a CV or cover letter that must look identical everywhere.
  • Submitting assignments or applications that require PDF format.
  • Sharing a contract draft that shouldn’t be casually edited.
  • Archiving a final version of a report.
  • Printing a document on a computer without Word installed.

Troubleshooting common problems

The PDF looks different on another computer. A font didn’t travel with the file. Re-export with fonts embedded (Word → Options → Save → Embed fonts in the file).

My hyperlinks are dead in the PDF. You used Print to PDF. Re-export with File → Export instead — the exporter preserves clickable links.

The PDF is too big to email. Compress pictures in Word before exporting (Picture Format → Compress Pictures), or choose the “Minimum size” option during export.

Urdu text breaks or disconnects in the PDF. Use a proper Unicode font such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu and export via File → Export rather than printing, which preserves text shaping.

Comments and tracked changes leaked into the PDF. Accept all changes and turn off markup (Review tab) before exporting the final version.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for Word to PDF conversion?

No. Word’s built-in exporter, Google Docs, LibreOffice and OS print-to-PDF are all free. Never pay for basic Word-to-PDF conversion.

Will my formatting stay exactly the same?

Yes, if you export from the app that created the file and embed your fonts. Layout shifts happen when a different program (for example Docs) re-renders the .docx — usually minor with common fonts.

How do I keep hyperlinks clickable in the PDF?

Use File → Export (not Print to PDF). Word’s exporter preserves clickable links and bookmarks; print drivers often flatten them into plain text.

The PDF file is too big to email. What now?

In Word, use Picture Format → Compress Pictures before exporting, or choose the “Minimum size” option during export. Our Compress PDF tool can also shrink the finished file.

Can I convert a .txt file to PDF on this site?

Yes — our free Text to PDF Converter turns plain text into a clean PDF entirely in your browser, with font and page-size options.

Why does Urdu text break in the PDF?

Use a proper Unicode font (such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu) and export via File → Export rather than printing, which preserves correct text shaping. Avoid copy-pasting from apps that break character joining.
