This is a complete guide: full PDF editing needs desktop software. For the most common job — adding text — our free Add Text to PDF tool works right here, privately, with nothing uploaded. For deeper edits, the honest free methods are LibreOffice Draw, Google Docs round-tripping and limited free online editors, ranked below.
Why is this a guide instead of a tool?
A PDF is a finished, printed page — not a Word document. True editing (reflowing paragraphs, changing fonts mid-sentence) is genuinely difficult, which is why most “free online PDF editors” are limited demos that push a paid plan after two edits. This guide ranks what is actually free.
Start with the job you actually have: if you just need to add text — a name, a date, a signature line, filling a blank — use our Add Text to PDF tool. It runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device, and it’s free with no sign-up. For changing existing text or rearranging pages, continue to the methods below.
How can I edit a PDF for free?
Our Add Text to PDF tool (recommended on-site method)
For the most common PDF edit — adding a name, date, signature text or filling a blank — our free tool does it privately in your browser.
- Open our Add Text to PDF tool.
- Load your PDF using the upload button.
- Click anywhere on the page and type; adjust the font size and position as needed.
- Download the edited PDF. Everything else on the page stays untouched.
Note: Because it runs locally in your browser, it’s safe for sensitive documents — and free with no sign-up.
LibreOffice Draw (free desktop editor)
LibreOffice Draw opens PDFs as editable documents — the best free option for changing existing text.
- Install LibreOffice from libreoffice.org (free for Windows, Mac, Linux).
- Right-click your PDF → Open with → LibreOffice Draw.
- Click any text box to edit its text directly; drag objects to move them.
- Go to File → Export as PDF to save your edited version.
Note: Complex layouts can shift, so always work on a copy of the original.
Google Docs round-trip
Convert the PDF into a Google Doc, edit freely, then export back to PDF. Best for text-heavy files.
- Upload the PDF to drive.google.com, right-click → Open with → Google Docs.
- Edit the document freely in Docs — full word-processor power.
- Go to File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf).
Note: Docs rebuilds the layout from scratch — great for text, rough on designed pages.
Sejda / Smallpdf free tier
Decent browser-based editors for quick one-off jobs — with daily free-task limits.
- Go to sejda.com or smallpdf.com and choose Edit PDF.
- Upload your file and use their editor to add or change text.
- Download the result (free tier: a few tasks per day or hour).
Note: Avoid uploading sensitive files to any online editor.
Which method should I choose?

| LibreOffice Draw | Changing existing text | Free, unlimited | Fully offline |

| Sejda / Smallpdf | Quick one-off edits | A few free tasks daily | Uploaded; auto-deleted |
What are the limitations and privacy risks?
PDFs don’t reflow. There are no real paragraphs — just positioned text. Even good editors can’t reflow a complex page like Word does, so keep edits small and local.
Scanned PDFs aren’t editable text. If you can’t select the words, the page is an image. Run OCR first (Google Docs import applies basic OCR), then edit.
“Redaction” with boxes is fake. Covering text with a white rectangle does not remove it — the text is still in the file, selectable and copyable. Real redaction needs dedicated software. Never ‘redact’ sensitive data with boxes.
Fonts may substitute. If the PDF’s font isn’t on your system, edited text may render in a replacement font.
When would I need this?
- Filling in application forms, invoices or certificates received as PDF.
- Adding a date, reference number or signature line to a document.
- Correcting a typo in a PDF you generated.
- Adding page numbers or a watermark (see our dedicated tools).
- Updating contact details on a price list or brochure.
Troubleshooting common problems
I can’t select or edit any text. It’s a scanned PDF (images, not text). Import it into Google Docs for basic OCR first, then export back to PDF.
The layout explodes in LibreOffice Draw. Draw struggles with complex PDFs. For text-heavy files, use the Google Docs round-trip instead; for design-heavy files, limit yourself to adding text with our on-site tool.
My added text uses the wrong font. Match the size approximately and pick a neutral font — exact font matching is rarely possible without the original font files.
I need to delete a whole page. That’s a different job — use our Remove PDF Pages tool rather than an editor.
Text I ‘blacked out’ is still selectable. Boxes don’t redact. The underlying text remains in the file. Use proper redaction software for sensitive removals.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a PDF for free without signing up?
Yes — our Add Text to PDF tool needs no sign-up and runs in your browser; LibreOffice Draw is free desktop software with no account at all.
Why can’t I select the text in my PDF?
It’s a scanned image, not real text. You need OCR first — try importing it into Google Docs, which applies basic OCR, then export back to PDF.
Is it safe to edit my PDF on a free website?
For non-sensitive files, yes on reputable sites. For anything private, use our in-browser tool or LibreOffice — both keep the file on your device.
Can I white-out or redact text this way?
Covering text with a white box does not remove it — the text stays in the file, selectable and copyable. Real redaction needs dedicated software. Never ‘redact’ sensitive data with boxes.
Will editing change the PDF’s formatting?
Adding text with our tool leaves everything else untouched. Deeper edits in LibreOffice Draw can shift complex layouts — always work on a copy.
Can I edit a PDF on my phone?
Our Add Text to PDF tool works in mobile browsers for adding text. For heavier edits, a desktop with LibreOffice is far easier.
