A 12 × 10 ft room needs 132 twelve-inch tiles (about 33 boxes) with 10% wastage, or 33 two-foot tiles (about 9 boxes). This free floor tile calculator works out the tiles and boxes your floor needs from its area and tile size — covering 12×12, 24×24 and 60×60 cm sizes common in Pakistan — plus an optional cost estimate.
How do you calculate how many floor tiles you need?
The formula is simple: tiles = floor area ÷ tile area × wastage factor. Measure the room's length and width in feet and multiply for the floor area — a 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. Find one tile's area in the same unit: a 12 × 12 inch tile is 1 sq ft, a 24 × 24 inch tile is 4 sq ft, and a 60 × 60 cm tile is about 3.87 sq ft. Divide: 120 ÷ 1 = 120 twelve-inch tiles, or 120 ÷ 4 = 30 two-foot tiles. Finally multiply by the wastage factor — 1.10 for a standard 10% allowance — giving 132 and 33 tiles respectively. Since tiles are sold by the box, round up: 132 ÷ 4 per box = 33 boxes, 33 ÷ 4 = 9 boxes (rounding up from 8.25).
What are the standard floor tile sizes in Pakistan?
The most common floor tiles in Pakistani markets are 12 × 12 inch (1 × 1 ft) and 24 × 24 inch (2 × 2 ft) ceramic and porcelain tiles, sold by local brands like Stile, Shabbir and Master alongside imported options. 12 × 24 inch (1 × 2 ft) planks are popular for a modern look, and large-format 32 × 32 inch and 60 × 60 cm porcelain tiles are increasingly common in new construction. Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines and faster laying, but they cost more per square foot and need a very level floor — an uneven screed will leave large tiles rocking. Wall tiles are usually smaller (10 × 16 in, 12 × 18 in) and are estimated the same way, using wall area instead of floor area.
How much extra tile should I buy for wastage?
Buy 10% extra for a standard straight-lay pattern in a rectangular room — this covers cutting losses at edges, breakage during transport and laying, and a few spare tiles for future repairs. Go to 15% for diagonal layouts, rooms with many corners, pillars or curved edges, and for large-format tiles which break more often when cut. Never skip the spares: tile shades vary between production batches, and a matching tile bought a year later can look visibly different. Store the spare boxes flat in a dry place, and keep the box label so you can reorder the same shade and calibre.
How do I use this calculator?
Enter the room's length and width in feet and pick your tile size — the presets cover the sizes sold across Pakistan, or choose "Custom" for anything else. Set the tiles-per-box from the box label (2 × 2 ft tiles usually come 3–4 per box, 12 × 12 tiles often more — the field is adjustable because it varies by brand). Add an optional price per square foot to get a tile-cost estimate. Results show the floor area, tiles needed with wastage, boxes to order rounded up, and the estimated cost. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each, and add them — or run the calculator once with the total area.
What are the limitations?
This is a material estimate, not a quotation. Box quantities, tile sizes and prices differ between brands and cities — basic ceramic tiles in Pakistan roughly range from Rs 150 to Rs 300 per sq ft and porcelain higher, but confirm current market rates with your supplier before budgeting. The cost estimate covers tiles only: laying labour, cement or adhesive, grout, edge trims and skirting tiles are separate and can add substantially. The calculator assumes one rectangular area; complex layouts should be measured in sections. Always verify the shade, calibre and box quantity printed on the actual boxes you buy.
Frequently asked questions
How many 2×2 tiles do I need for a 10×10 room?
A 10 × 10 ft room is 100 sq ft. Each 2 × 2 ft tile covers 4 sq ft, so 100 ÷ 4 = 25 tiles, plus 10% wastage = 28 tiles. At 4 tiles per box that is 7 boxes.
How many tiles come in one box?
It varies by brand and size. 24 × 24 inch tiles commonly come 3 or 4 per box; 12 × 12 inch tiles often 8 or more. Always check the box label — this calculator lets you set the exact number.
Should skirting tiles be included in the estimate?
No — skirting (the tile strip along the wall base) is measured in running feet around the room's perimeter, not floor area. Estimate it separately: perimeter in feet divided by the tile length, plus 10% wastage.
Can I use this calculator for wall tiles?
Yes. Measure the wall area (length × height, minus doors and windows) and enter it as the room dimensions — for example a 10 ft wide, 8 ft high wall can be entered as 10 × 8. Use the wall tile's size and the same wastage logic.
Why do I need spare tiles after the job?
Tiles get discontinued and shade batches change, so a matching replacement may be unavailable later. A few spare boxes let you repair cracked tiles without retiling the whole floor.
Does tile price include installation?
No. Market tile prices are material-only. Laying charges, cement or tile adhesive, grout and skirting are billed separately by the mistri or contractor — get those quotes in writing before work starts.
