Units

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. This calculator works in centimetres and kilograms or feet, inches and pounds, shows the WHO category and the healthy weight range for your height, and can apply the lower cut-offs recommended for Asian populations.

How to calculate BMI

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read your BMI, category and healthy weight range.

BMI categories for adults

BMIWHO categoryAsian cut-offs
Below 18.5UnderweightBelow 18.5
18.5 – 24.9Healthy weight18.5 – 22.9
25 – 29.9Overweight23 – 27.4
30 and aboveObesity27.5 and above

The WHO has noted that health risks start at a lower BMI in many Asian populations, which is why lower cut-offs are often used in South and East Asia.

Limitations

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may score as overweight, and it is not designed for children, teenagers or pregnant women. Waist size and other measures matter too. Talk to a doctor for personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9 (or 18.5 to 22.9 with Asian cut-offs).

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?

Not very. Muscle is dense, so muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat.
