Choose an image with textphoto, screenshot or scan · JPG, PNG, WebP

This OCR tool uses the open-source Tesseract engine, running in your browser, to recognise printed text in JPG, PNG and WebP images and turn it into editable text you can copy or download.

How to extract text from an image

  1. Choose the language of the text (English is selected).
  2. Choose or drop a clear photo, screenshot or scan.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Getting the best OCR results

  • Use a sharp, well-lit image where the text is at least 20 pixels tall.
  • Photograph documents straight on; crop away the background with the crop tool.
  • Choose the correct language: Urdu and Arabic need their own language data.
  • Printed text works far better than handwriting.

How it works

The first time you run OCR, the browser downloads the Tesseract engine and the language data (a few MB) from a public CDN. Your image itself is not uploaded; recognition runs on your device. Later runs in the same language are much faster.

Frequently asked questions

Is this OCR free?

Yes, with no limits on the number of images.

Can it read handwriting?

Tesseract is designed for printed text. Neat block handwriting sometimes works, but cursive usually does not.

Can I convert a PDF to text?

For PDFs with selectable text use PDF to Text. For scanned PDFs, convert the page to JPG with PDF to JPG and then run OCR here.

Does it support Urdu?

Yes. Select Urdu (or English + Urdu for mixed text). Printed Urdu in Naskh-style fonts gives the best results; Nastaliq calligraphy is harder to read.
