Technical explanation

How to interpret this tool before a WordPress migration

A migration often needs more temporary storage than the final website footprint. Backup generation, archive compression, extraction, staging and rollback copies can coexist for part of the project. Running a server nearly full during database writes or archive extraction is an avoidable operational risk.

Archives do not eliminate temporary usage

A compressed backup still needs space for the archive itself and often space again for the extracted destination copy.

Databases need breathing room

Database engines and operating systems use temporary space during imports, updates and log operations.

Retained rollback copies are intentional

Keeping a verified rollback copy can be worth the extra storage until the new environment is fully validated.

Practical questions

How much free space should remain after migration?

There is no universal number, but operating with meaningful headroom is safer than filling the disk close to capacity.

Should remote backups count?

Not if they are truly remote and not cached locally. Count any local archive that will exist during the move.

Does staging double storage?

A full staging clone can approach the production footprint, though exclusions and remote media can change that.
