Each permission digit is the sum of read (4), write (2) and execute (1) for the owner, group and everyone else. The calculator converts between checkboxes, octal numbers and symbolic strings and writes the chmod command.

How to use it

  1. Tick the permissions you want, or type an octal number or symbolic string.
  2. Copy the chmod command.

Recommended WordPress permissions

Folders 755, files 644, and wp-config.php 600 or 640 depending on the server. Avoid 777: it lets any user on the server modify the file and is a common cause of hacked sites.

find . -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;
