Caption size — 9% of image width

Upload any photo, add classic top and bottom captions, tune the text size, and download a crisp PNG meme. Everything runs in your browser: no account, no watermark stamped on your image, and no limit on how many memes you make.

Why do free meme makers add watermarks?

For the same reason free video editors do: the watermark is the upsell. Kapwing’s own pricing page states that free-plan exports come with a watermark, and removing it requires the Pro plan at $16 a month billed annually. It is a legitimate business model — servers and editors cost money — but it is annoying when all you wanted was a captioned photo. A meme is just text drawn over an image, which any browser can do in milliseconds with no server involved. This tool does exactly that, locally, so there is nothing to monetise and no watermark to remove.

How do I make a meme with my own photo?

  1. Click the upload box (or drag a photo onto it) and choose any JPG, PNG or WebP from your device.
  2. Type your top and bottom captions — they are converted to the classic all-caps meme style automatically.
  3. Drag the size slider until the text sits comfortably on the image, then click Download meme.

The preview is the final image: what you see is the PNG you get, at up to 1080 px wide — sharp enough for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

What makes meme text easy to read?

Three things: contrast, outline and brevity. White text with a thick black outline stays readable over almost any photo, which is why it became the meme standard — this tool applies that style automatically. Keep each caption under about eight words; long sentences shrink the text and kill the joke. And place captions where the image is least busy: a plain sky or dark background behind the words beats a cluttered one every time. If your photo is very bright, nudging the size up slightly helps the outline do its job.

Can I use any picture I find online?

Technically you can upload anything, but you should only meme images you have the right to use: your own photos, screenshots you took, or images explicitly licensed for reuse. Pulling a photographer’s watermarked stock photo into a meme does not make the watermark issue go away — it just moves the infringement onto you. For reaction memes and templates, stick to widely shared formats or, better, photograph your own version: original memes travel further anyway.

What size should the caption text be?

The default — 9% of the image width — suits most photos, but it depends on caption length and image shape. Short two-word captions can go bigger for impact; long captions need to shrink to fit on one or two lines. On tall portrait photos, slightly smaller text keeps both captions clear of faces. Use the slider and trust your eyes: if you have to squint at the preview on your phone, your audience will too.

Where can I share the memes I make?

Anywhere images go: WhatsApp groups and statuses, Instagram posts and stories, Facebook, X, Reddit and Discord. The PNG downloads without platform-specific compression surprises, and because there is no watermark, it looks native everywhere instead of advertising the tool you used. One tip for group chats: add your caption text as the message alongside the image too, so friends scrolling with images off still get the joke.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meme generator really free?

Yes — unlimited memes, no account, no credits, no “pro export” button. The captioning runs entirely in your browser, so there is no per-meme cost to pass on to you.

Will my meme have a watermark?

No. Unlike editors whose free tier stamps every export, this tool adds nothing to your image — the PNG contains only your photo and your captions.

Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. The image never leaves your device: it is drawn onto a canvas in your browser tab and the download is generated locally. Close the tab and it is gone.

Can I make memes on my phone?

Yes — upload a photo from your gallery, type the captions and download the PNG, all in the mobile browser. For pixel-perfect text placement, a larger screen helps.

Can I make GIF memes?

Not with this tool — it makes static image memes (PNG). For animated memes, try our free GIF Maker: it turns 2–8 photos or animated text into real looping GIFs, with no watermark.

Can I use the memes commercially?

The tool places no restriction on your downloads — but the underlying photo must be yours or licensed for commercial use. A meme of someone else’s copyrighted photo is still their photo.
