Enter an amount and a VAT rate. Add VAT gives the VAT and gross total from a net price; Remove VAT (reverse VAT) extracts the VAT from a price that already includes it.
How to calculate VAT
- Choose Add VAT or Remove VAT.
- Enter the amount and rate.
- Read net, VAT and gross amounts.
Reverse VAT formula
To remove VAT, divide the gross price by 1 + rate. At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net and £20 VAT. A common mistake is taking 20% off £120 (giving £96), which is wrong.
Common VAT rates
| Country | Standard rate |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 20% (reduced 5%) |
| United Arab Emirates | 5% |
| Saudi Arabia | 15% |
| Bahrain | 10% |
| Oman | 5% |
| Germany | 19% |
| France | 20% |
Rates change; confirm the current rate with the tax authority before invoicing.
